MIXED MEDIA PAINTINGS

Picture
Picture
"I am a landscape based abstract painter.
In my paintings color and texture come
from the rich oil paints that are my
delight to use. Light and dark are the
visual tools used to define spaces and
shapes. Painting is a very physical
process for me and often I am “up to
my elbows” covered in luscious paint.
I build energy and content as the work
develops.

I want to create art that you will look
at again and again and continue to
discover areas of beautiful texture and
line. My work is about the paint, the
colors, the texture and surprises. I paint
my response to my world. I paint my
emotion.

Enjoy."

"My goal is to convey the essence of a landscape, while eliminating much of its detail; similar to that first impression, or the large shapes you see when your eyes
are half open. I consider my work atmospheric-transitional. Influences for my work are primarily from impressionism, the tonalist movement and abstract expressionism."

Wendy was a graduate of East Carolina University with a degree in Fine Art. She worked in the fields of graphic design and photography for many years before coming full circle to painting.

CONTEMPORARY DOG AND CAT ART

Picture
"Painting is my gateway to happiness and freedom of spirit. Art is magical and has the power to transform the human existence. Why paint pets? Because they represent the purest forms of unconditional love. They love irrespective of gender, race or creed.

My love for animals stems from the deep connection I have with my own pets. I have two Chihuahuas, Sadie and Maya and one Chihuahua/Poodle mix, Frida. These babies have enhanced my life in ways that I could never explain. My heart goes out to those animals that do not have permanent homes or loving families.

I actively work with local animal rescue groups and donate my art to raise awareness and provide financial support for these wonderful organizations that strive to give all animals a deserving, loving home."

FINE ART WATERCOLORS
Picture
Picture
"My watercolors are improvised on the urban landscape - gritty, stark, rough - engaging a deeper emotion - using
shadow, texture, color and glazes moving art to a more complex tonality. The style is a product of the time and place. The versatility is my signature.
Charlsen’s background as a theatrical lighting designer in New York City for
31 years has allowed her to incorporate her knowledge of light, shadow, scale, colors and textures to culminate an artistic drama. Her work is inspired by architecture and cityscapes captured through the lens of her camera."

"Why paint? Because a photograph does not tell the whole story. What I seek to express is emotion, mood, or “spirit” that a camera cannot capture. When I am watching a white egret start its preening ritual in its evening roost, and the setting sun casts a glow around its form, the silhouette and the predictable series of movements are like a dance that I just want to join, and share. It represents a moment of unguarded self-care, introspection and tranquility.

I am particularly in love with large wading birds. I would say this is because I have a background in biology, but it is likely the other way around. My passion for the natural world, as well as my desire to understand it are what drove me to my studies. A chance experiment with paint led me to a career as an artist, and I find it to be more impactful than research or even teaching. My recent series features larger-than-life birds on canvas, in motion, flying and preening. Simple backgrounds allow the bird to be the focus and enhance the tranquility of the images. I often employ 23 karat gold similar to historic iconography to elevate the status of the subject and to play with the representation of glowing light.

I currently paint oil on canvas but I am always exploring new media."
